Well Floridians, we find ourselves in the sweltering heat of yet another summer here in The Sunshine State. Many of us, including myself, will ceremoniously kick off the season with a trip to the beach this weekend, to celebrate Memorial Day; and to kiss the days of a low monthly electric bill goodbye for a while. Hey, chin up, buttercup, it’s not all sweat stains and sunburns, right? Summer also means barbecues, cute bathing suits, and most importantly, the beach. Now, I know that going to the beach can be less than zen for those of us whose hair color comes from our stylist’s magic bowl and brush, but don’t fret! I’ve got a few tips to keep your color fresh, while still being able to enjoy the sand, sun, and surf.

First of all, let me state the obvious: If you’re going to be in direct sunlight for a significant amount of time, wear a hat. I know, I know, this is kid stuff; but I had to mention it for the blondes out there (figuratively speaking, of course.) Anyway, what a great opportunity to accessorize!

If you feel like your beach outfit looked better without the hat, there are several products on the market these days that offer protection from UV rays. One of my go-to’s is Bumble and Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer, which not only protects your hair from UV rays, but also keeps hair hydrated with six “featherlight” oils. Or, if waves are what you’re after, try the limited edition Bb Surf Styling Leave In; it leaves hair soft and silky, while enhancing natural wave, AND providing UV protection; talk about a triple threat. Try spraying your hair down thoroughly with Bb Primer, or combing some Surf Styling Leave In through before you head to the coast for maximum sun protection.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: won’t getting my hair wet fade my color more quickly? I’m not talking about sea water, I’m talking about the tap water from your house. Think of your hair like a sponge: the more a sponge has already absorbed, the less room it has to absorb something new.The same thing is true for your hair: if your hair is already saturated with regular water, it won’t have as much room to soak up the salt water. If you combine this tip with the previous one, it’s twice as effective!

No one wants to go to bed with sand in their hair, so the post beach shampoo is essential. The type of shampoo you use matters, but you already know that, don’t you? You hair color queen, you. Ask your stylist which color-safe shampoo they think is right for you; but a good cover-all option is Bumble and Bumble’s Color Minded.

Now that you’re armed with some knowledge and tips to keep you looking fabulous, hop on your board and paddle out, stress free! Seriously, don’t stress, your roots will grow in grey.
